The Tale of Ders Khan by Cem Güldüren

A mighty lord from somewhere,
Whence he came, not one soul knew.
On horseback he arrived, flanked by his warriors
With only good intentions and virtue in his breast
He was known as Ders Khan.

A chivalrous knight, he soon made a name for himself
With his men-at-arms he held evil at bay.
He helped the poor and protected the innocent
Many a mother prayed for his well-being
From pauper to nobleman, everyone was in awe of Ders Khan

He carved out a fief for himself in the land
All approved, ‘twas a reward well-deserved.
His fame grew larger, and his name reached far corners
Drawn by his well-known valor and justice,
Youths from everywhere rushed to the ranks of Ders Khan

But Ders Khan knew.
He knew that evil could not be fought by sword alone
It had to be defeated by wisdom and learning, as well.
Thus, his quest was to educate those that came to him
His disciples would be well-versed and wise

To this end, he established his places of learning
Youths came in droves to these institutions, known as Ders-Khan-E
He only asked them for a few coins in return.
There they embraced his ways
There they drank from his unquestionable wisdom.

Today, all of his disciples sing his praises across the land:
“O Ders Khan, the mightiest of khans!
Thou art the one that shall save us
Deliver us from evil and teach us thy lore
And bring us to glory and fortune, my lord!”
